Artwork Specifications and Requirements

Please note that Buy Direct Mialing Lists.com's print vendors back up all jobs head to head; files will be backed up in this manner as they are submitted.

All images must be of high resolution (300 dpi) at the size you intend to print.
All images must be in CMYK Color Mode, NO RGB IMAGES This includes photographs, graphics and logos.

Acceptable Image Formats:

EPS (Save Photoshop EPS files with BINARY Encoding)
PDF
TIF (Do not save TIFF files with“LZW Compression”)

Black:
In order for your black borders, solids, headlines and parts of images to appear dark and saturated, aka "rich", you need to create a "new black" with the following CMYK values:

C: 60%
M: 40%
Y: 20%
K: 100%

Please make sure to keep "rich" black consistent throughout your file. Make sure that logos or images with a black background have the same values as the blackarea it is placed over.

Borders:
It is not recommended that you use a thin border around your job. If you are designing your file with a border around the edges, it must be a minimum of 1/4” wide, plus the 1/8” we need for bleed. Due to physical limitations of guillotine cutting, borders thinner than that will most likely appear uneven.

We are not responsible for uneven borders if they are not at least 1/4” (.25” ) thick. We strongly recommend that borders less than 1/4” be avoided.

Layout Programs and Acceptable File Formats

Layouts made and saved in Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Quark Express or Illustrator are acceptable. To ensure the best result we recommend saving (or exporting) your file as a print-ready PDF (highest resolution) allowing for a 1/8 inch bleed (.125”) where neeed. If saving your layout as an Adobe illustrator EPS you must convert all text to outlines and be sure your document is in CMYK mode.

Name your files “XXXX_front.eps” and “XXX_Back.eps” as an example.
You may want to use STUFFIT! or WINZIP! to compress your files prior to sending

Note:
Not necessarily required. Will only aid in file transfer time if you are uploading your files and have a relatively slow internet connection) If you are missing anything or incorrectly submit files, this could delay the process and consequently the receipt of your finished order.

What if you do not have access to these programs?

We are aware that not everyone has those programs at their disposal. Many of you only have Corel Draw, PageMaker, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, PaintShop, etc. If these are the only tools at your disposal, you can attempt to use them if they allow you to create either an EPS, TIFF, or PDF out of the native file. You can increase the likelihood of sending us printable files by doing so. You can use Acrobat Distiller with a wide range of programs to create PDF files that will increase your chances of producing a quality printing piece.

Unlike software programs like QuarkExpress and Photoshop, some of these programs were not developed to be used as tools for the creation of files to be output for production on printing presses. Using the programs we recommend will increase the likelihood of the quick turnaround of a print-ready job from you.

Have no fear though. If you're not sure if what you did is printable, send us your files and we'll examine them and let you know if there is anything that will prevent us from printing it. If we find everything to be in order, we will put a proof online for you to look at. If there is something wrong, we will email you what the problem is to help you fix and revise your files. This initial consultation is part of the price continued consultation and technical support in design and development will incur additionalcharges.

Files not explicitly matching the guidelines outlined in this section may cause your order to be delayed or additional charges incurred by you.

Due to tight turnaround times and low margin for error, we reserve the right to refuse orders with files that do not meetour basic criteria.

Customers employing the services of third party designers should be sure these file submission guidelines are understood and followed.

Please be aware of local post office requirements when designing your card. We ARE NOT the USPS or a mailing house and are not responsible for postcards or jobs that do not meet postal regulations.
